Greetings everyone! I hope everyone had a great summer. There has been alot going on with Heart of Chaos including the successful completion of San Jose's First Annual Chalk Art Festival series that took place in June, August and September. In fact, it was so successful that we have been invited to put on a chalk art event as a part of our Community Outreach Art Program at Juvenile Hall. To check out pictures from the chalk art festival please visit the Virtual Exhbit. We have also been invited to create during "Buddy Walk", a big fundraiser for the Down Syndrome Society of Silicon Valley. The event takes place at Lake Cunningham on October 20th, we hope you can join us! For details, please visit http://www.bayareabuddywalk.com/.
This edition of News and Resources for Creatives is jam packed with good stuff. Our featured artist this month is Heart of Chaos Director Anabella Pinon, a talented artist and caring mentor/teacher. We miss her very much as her path has recently taken her out of state for the time being. We can't wait for her return!
Be sure to check out our call for artists section for details on our next juried exhibit, Up Roar 2007, which opens on November 2nd at South First Billiards in downtown San Jose. The event will be held during South First Friday's and gives artists an opportunity to display and sell their work. The voting for the exhibit will be done by the audience who visit our reception. In addition to great art you can expect to hear great tunes from local bands and dj's. This is an event you won't want to miss!
On that note, happy reading!
Sincerely Your Editor,
Jenifer "Jen" Sluga

Anabella Pinon, the Archetype of the Quintessence Artist and
our Beloved Director
By: Joanne Hobbs
Anabella Pinon lives and breathes art. Her passion expresses itself in a multitude of ways from teaching art to children and juveniles, to collaborating with fellow artists, to curator exhibits, to creating on the spot portraits of friends and acquaintances, she calls “posse portraits.” As Heart of Chaos’s dynamite director Bella, as she likes to be called, has led the collective since the spring of 2005 through 7
art and photography exhibits and our recent public art Chalk Art Festival. She has also been the anchor artist for the Heart of Chaos community outreach task force teaching a variety of techniques and mediums in the county’s Juvenile Hall facility every week for a year and a half.
Anabella was born in San Jose, CA in 1980 of Mexican American heritage. When she was 10, she moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was in this desert landscape known for its austere beauty and artist communities that she started painting, using an old set of oils from her father. At 13 she started taking photographs with her uncle’s old Nikon camera. She experimented with both mediums before receiving formal instruction in high school.
In high school she took four years of photography and three years of art classes learning the basics of drawing, painting, sculpture & print making. She also participated in student art shows where she displayed her work. She graduated with honors in Arts when she was seventeen and moved back to San Jose.
In 1999 Bella enrolled at De Anza College to pursue an associate degree in art history and take studio classes in oil and acrylic painting, ceramics, and sculpture. Before studying European art, she took a three month leave of absence to travel abroad and discover European art on her own. When she returned, she also explored film, performance art, acting and set design while continuing her art instruction.
Outside of school she stayed involved in community-based art shows in the Poet Artist Network (PAN) and Phantom Galleries. She joined the Distracted Collective, a multi medium collective of artists and collaborated frequently with other painters creating live paintings at art events in San Francisco and San Jose. Her house was always a meeting place for artists, photographers, musicians and writers and ideas, fun and creativity flowed with great abundance at these informal gatherings.
As a board member for WORKS San Jose Bella created family and youth workshops and through the city’s Art Express gave tours of the variety of art exhibits shown at the gallery. As a Heart of Chaos director she gained more experience in curating art shows, coordinating public art events and delving into public relations and marketing arenas. She has worked as a free lance artist on murals and landed her first commissioned mural assignment at the Children’s Discovery Museum . In fact, this past summer she has worked for the museum teaching design and video production to middle school children.
In late August Bella left for Albuquerque to help her father in his business and to continue her personal exploration and expression of art. She is sorely missed and we are scrambling to fill her shoes. All of us at Heart of Chaos will celebrate her return to the Bay area next year and wish her the best in the months that she is away. |

Michael Denning¹s journey from junkie to dynamo designer/teacher was a trip into a dark abyss and out again, transformed. Michael portrayed the brutal world of addiction and the blinding clarity of sobriety in a powerful collage that won second place in the Youth on Fire exhibit at Brooks College in November, 2005. From there the 4 foot by 5 foot collage went on display at the Northern California Narcotic Anonymous Conference to inspire the viewers who could readily identify with Michael¹s descent and gain hope from its message of recovery. As of September, 2007, this powerful work of art that was in its making a cathartic and transforming experience for the artist hangs in the court room at Santa Clara County¹s Juvenile Hall. And Michael who took "The Way of No Ecstasy" as the piece is called is beginning his work as a teacher and uplifter in the juvenile justice system. |

Bay Area Buddy Walk
Heart of Chaos has been invited to create chalk art at the 2007 Bay Area Buddy Walk put on by the Down Syndrome Society of the Silicon Valley being held Saturday, October 20, 2007 at the Cypress Pavilion at Lake Cunningham Park (San Jose). Come on out and create with us while supporting a great cause!
The Buddy Walk has established itself as the premier advocacy event for Down Syndrome.
The purpose of the Buddy Walk is two-fold: to promote awareness and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome and to raise funds for local and national education, research and advocacy programs.
The walks - which involve children and adults with Down Syndrome, their families and friends, and thousands of local supporters - spread the message that individuals with Down Syndrome possess a wide range of abilities and are active participants in the community.
The Buddy Walk was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society in 1995 to bring together a wide range of concerned individuals to reach out to friends, family and co-workers to promote awareness and inclusion for people with Down Syndrome and to raise funds for local and national education, research and advocacy programs.

Catalyst Juvenile Hall Garden Program is Going Strong!
Two different wards garden each week on Wednesday afternoon and Saturday morning. The produce which is distributed to the staff as well as eaten in the wards includes squash, tomatoes, eggplant and lots of different kinds of peppers. The winter garden was planted last week and the boys decided to plant carrots in the form of a cross with four circles around it. Plans are underway to add more gardens so that more youth can be involved.

In September the year and a half year old art program offered by Heart of Chaos artists Anabella Pinon and Miguel Machuca moved to B9, the high security ward where young men who have committed more serious crimes are awaiting sentencing. We are eager to engage this population in conversation and help them express themselves in a variety of mediums. Guest artist, sculptor and at risk youth mentor Juan Flores will join Bay area scribe Pam van Dyke and Catalyst Director Joanne Hobbs will begin the program and seek other established artists for guest appearances. |
Catalyst for Youth is also starting a fashion design program on October 5 in G2 the girls honor ward. Five donated sewing machines and an assortment of donated fabric will be used by seasoned fashion instructor Terry Travis to teach the young women basic sewing techniques and how to create a variety of accessories and items of clothing. Heart of Chaos artist and long time quilter Abbey Shane is expected to join the program this fall and teach the girls the joy of quilting.
On October 6th, Heart of Chaos will present the first Juvenile Hall chalk art event, inspired by the three chalk art events in San Jose this summer. Ten HOC artists will create art alongside two young people from each of the 12 wards. The wards are competing for a pizza party and general acclaim from the rest of the staff. Stay tuned for pictures. |

The Overpass Gallery
859 West Hedding
San Jose, CA 95126
for more info email Al at apreciado@bcp.org
The Overpass Gallery named after the nearby Hedding Street overpass. It began in March 2006
to promote local artists.
The gallery mission was to simply showcase visual art, poetry and collaborative music without the agenda of selling or money being part of the process. The artists were the cause of their own being helping to facilitate press, installations , receptions and all the other requirements of putting together a show.
