January started the year off with a bang! On January 18th we opened Elizabeth Cruz's solo exhibit titled "When Memories Speak: Child Abuse" at the Gardner Community Center. If you haven't had the opportunity to check out this exhibit Elizabeth's work will be on display at Gardner until January 31st, see the Events section for details.

On February 1st Lacey Bryant's solo exhibit, Share Love, will open at Gardner with an opening reception from 6PM-9PM. This is an event you won't want to miss! If you have been to any of our shows in the last year then you have seen Lacey's amazing and vibrant work, you may have even seen her painting live at Up Roar back in November or painting faces during the First Annual Chalk Art Festival last summer. You can read more about her in this issue's Featured Artist section.

During the month of February you can also check out the work of Heart of Chaos Founder, Curtis Manzano, at Riga's European Bakery and Café in San Jose which will be on display until the 21st. You can also find details about this exhibit in the Events section.

If you are an artist interested in doing a solo or duo exhibit be sure to check out the Call for Artists section to learn more about 2 locations that have invited Heart of Chaos to put on monthly exhibits. This is a great opportunity to show your work! Heart of Chaos will even help you design a flyer and promote the exhibit and you will be the featured artist in our bulletin the week of your opening reception!

As you can see we have a lot going on this month and in the months to come. Be sure to mark your calendars for all of our events listed in the Events section. The events listed in this bulletin are just the tip of the iceberg! Next month we will do a feature on a school age chapter of the Heart of Chaos program that we are working on, so stay tuned!

Have a good month, hope to see you on Friday for the Share Love exhibit!

Sincerely Your Editor,
Jenifer "Jen" Sluga

Lacey Bryant - Share Love
By: Leon Morimoto

lacey

Lacey Bryant loves art. The evidence is seen in her work as a visual artist. Ms. Bryant works as a part-time graphic artist, here in the valley, and freelances as a muralist and scenic painter. She spent her youth painting, drawing, sculpting, acting, singing, dancing, and climbing trees in Milpitas, Ca. After many years of experimenting in varying modes of expression, Lacey discovered painting to be her method of choice.

Oil pastel and oil paint are frequent in Lacey’s work, along with vibrant color and bold strokes, which have become her signatures. Lacey’s fondness for the human figure and expressive portraiture is apparent. She often uses her friends as subjects, recalling their mannerisms from memory, and utilizes several photos as references for dynamic poses. These works are intimately detailed, and full of humor and other joyous emotions that would make one smile when thinking of pals. Lacey has the precious ability to illustrate a genuine sense of what recess meant to many of us in elementary school. It is a gift like none other.

Lacey’s latest series of paintings entitled “Share Love”, was originally conceived as small trading cards with the specific intent of sharing love in the form of free art. The card printings have been distributed by Lacey and her accomplices at various public spaces, with hope that the recipient might pay the gesture forward throughout their day, resulting in more acts of caring and goodwill. The work is a departure from the urban seriousness of being too cool for school, and is refreshingly welcoming and willing to hug any viewer in sight. The common element in most of the series is the heart shape, a simply accessible symbol that represents words, thoughts and actions of love. The use of hearts can be interpreted in many ways, but is mainly shaped as the idea of what it is most easily recognized as.  Lacey’s work is a colorfully bright, upbeat, humorous and lighthearted achievement that will definitely prompt dialogue to get viewers thinking, feeling, and having fun.

Lacey’s work will be on display for the enduring month of February, beginning with the opening reception on Friday, February 1st at the Gardner Community Center.
Lacey will be painting live, and has planned an interactive element during the reception for those that attend.  Admission is FREE, and the reception is from 6pm to 9pm. For more details, see events.

Catalyst for Youth Juvenile Hall Garden Program

Winter gardening began with planting seeds in peat pots and rigging up a greenhouse using the tomato cages and a plastic drop cloth. Other gardening projects began in the classroom next to the Juvenile Hall garden as the rains came down in the last couple of weeks and soaked the soil. The young men painted river stones as a signature and statement that their energy went into the garden. The stones are placed around the garden area and will remain there for all to see.

HOC Juvenile Hall Art Program

The Heart of Chaos art program at SCC Juvenile Hall ended the year 2007 and began 2008 with a clay sculpture workshop offered by Bellarmine College Preparatory art teacher and visual artist Al Preciado. The classes were big hit with the B9 living unit young men and they expressed their individuality and creativity with great satisfaction. Great appreciation goes to Al for giving his time and talent to these teens.

Also in the HOC weekly art program HOC artist Miguel Machuca began a series of painting workshops in mid January in the same unit by sharing his own journey as expressed in a series of paintings. He held the minors' attention with his passionate and heartfelt delivery. More on the painting workshops as they progress. Thanks Miguel!
